Russia, China Signal Possible Veto on Renewing UN Panel Monitoring Iran Sanctions

Per Reuters (Tuesday, September 1, 2026, cited by Ecoiran via Khabaronline), the UN Security Council is set to vote on September 17 (26 Shahrivar) on renewing the mandate of the panel of experts monitoring Iran sanctions, which expires September 26 (4 Mehr), even though Russia and China said in a joint statement in March that the Council no longer has authority to continue the panel's work. Jerome Bonnafont, France's UN ambassador, whose country holds the Council's rotating presidency this month, said Iran's nuclear file is central to the Council's discussions in September. Reuters reported diplomats have raised the possibility that Moscow and Beijing could veto the resolution; Russia previously vetoed the renewal of the panel monitoring North Korea sanctions in 2024 (1403).
