South Korea to bring Strait of Hormuz deployment plan to parliament
4 September 2026 | 2 months ago
South Korean media, citing government and military sources, reported that Seoul is preparing to send equipment and forces to the Strait of Hormuz. According to Ecoiran, citing Tasnim and Reuters, the South Korean government intends to deploy the equipment before the end of 2026 and has begun seeking parliamentary approval. Options under review include sending a maritime patrol aircraft, a logistics support ship, or a mine reconnaissance and clearance unit, and Seoul is also consulting on the scale and nature of possible participation alongside the United States, Britain and France. South Korea's presidential office said on Thursday, September 3, 2026, that the deployment is not yet certain. The decision comes as US President Donald Trump has been pressing South Korea to join the US military presence in the Persian Gulf.
