Syria's General Authority for Land and Sea Border Crossings said on Thursday, August 6, 2026 (15 Mordad 1405), that Syria has exported more than 2 million metric tonnes of Iraqi oil through the Baniyas port transit system since the start of the year. According to Shafaq News, about 30 tankers carrying fuel oil and refined petroleum products have transported the shipments; the port has received 108 tankers loaded with roughly 3.23 million metric tonnes of various petroleum products since the start of 2026.
Last month, Iraq and Syria signed a US-brokered memorandum of understanding to restart the Kirkuk-Baniyas oil pipeline, opening a new route for Iraqi crude exports to Mediterranean ports through Syrian territory. The project is aimed at diversifying Iraq's export routes and strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.
