According to the UAE's official news agency (WAM), as reported by Donya-e-Eqtesad, US President Donald Trump and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, as well as developments in West Asia and ongoing efforts to address them, in a phone call on Thursday, September 3, 2026 (12 Shahrivar 1405).
The call followed a report by Axios that White House envoy Steve Witkoff met this week on the Italian island of Sardinia with UAE National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss next steps on Iran, a meeting held days after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a sanctions push against Iran known as "Operation Economic Outcast."
