Wall Street Journal: US Extends West Asia Military Deployment for Scenario of Tension With Iran Through 2027
3 September 2026 | 2 months ago
According to Khabaronline, citing the Jerusalem Post and the Wall Street Journal, the US military has extended its troop deployment across West Asia, a move the report says shows the Trump administration is preparing for the possibility that tension with Iran continues through 2027. The report says the US currently has about 50,000 troops in the region, alongside 19 warships, including two aircraft carriers and 13 guided missile destroyers, along with fighter squadrons and air defense units.
US President Donald Trump wrote in a social media post about the current situation: "I much prefer our current position, with near total control of the Strait of Hormuz and an economy that is totally collapsing." Citing people familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has been discussing privately with senior aides whether to declare an end to the war with Iran. Tom Karako, missile defense project director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, warned that sustaining this pace of operations could wear down military personnel and delay equipment maintenance.
