Trump cancels planned strike on Iran, says perimeters of a deal have been agreed

2 August 2026 | 3 months ago

US President Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social platform late on Saturday, 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405), that he has cancelled a large-scale military attack that had been planned against Iran. He said the decision followed requests from Iran and a number of countries in the region, and came after an understanding was reached on the "perimeters of a deal", on condition that the deal be concluded quickly.

Trump said the agreement would bring the "immediate, complete and total opening of the Strait of Hormuz" and an end to what he called "Iran's nuclear threat". He added that the United States remains at full combat readiness and that Israel has joined Washington in the decision, provided a deal is reached rapidly. Al Jazeera reported that there had been no official response from Tehran at the time of publication.

According to Al Jazeera, the message came a day after US media reported that Washington and Tel Aviv were preparing to strike Iran's energy infrastructure. Earlier the same Saturday, 1 August, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told his Saudi counterpart that any US or Israeli action would meet a "proportionate response". The status of the Strait of Hormuz has been the single largest external variable for the global oil market in recent weeks and, through expectations, for Tehran's currency and gold markets.
