16 July 2026 | 3 months ago
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday, July 15 (US time) that Iran had released an American citizen, Dena Karari, who had been detained since December 2024, and allowed her to leave the country. Trump wrote that she is now safely outside of Iran and in good condition, and thanked Iran for the gesture of goodwill.
Karari, a 53-year-old dual national, had traveled to Iran to visit family and had her passports seized when she tried to leave. According to her lawyer, Jared Genser, she had suffered a major heart attack the week before her release. The release was announced amid an escalation of military tensions between Iran and the United States.
