US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday 29 July 2026 (7 Mordad 1405) that he would sharply escalate strikes against Iran. Speaking to a Fox News reporter he said the US would be hitting Iran hard, and told reporters in the Oval Office: "They know it's coming. They're asking us not to do it, but you know they tried shooting at [us] last night. So it's our turn, and we're going to hit them very hard."
The remarks came a day after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had targeted an airbase and a US Central Command centre in Jordan; CENTCOM said all the missiles were intercepted. According to Al Jazeera, three US soldiers were killed at a base in Jordan on 17 July, and at least 18 American soldiers have died since the war began in February. The US had paused its operations from Saturday after 13 consecutive days of attacks.
A Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday found that only 34 percent of US voters support military action against Iran, the lowest share recorded since the start of the war.
