Global Macro & Iran

Global activity reaches Iran through commodity demand, export receipts, import costs, financing conditions and expectations. A Federal Reserve surprise can affect world rates and exchange rates, but domestic settlement and policy can strengthen, weaken or reverse the local transmission.

Global activity reaches Iran through commodity demand, export receipts, import costs, financing conditions and expectations. A Federal Reserve surprise can affect world rates and exchange rates, but domestic settlement and policy can strengthen, weaken or reverse the local transmission. Separate the event from what markets already expected. Use scenarios with named channels and dated observations rather than a universal chain from a foreign announcement to a Tehran price. World economic data also have release lags and revisions.

Worked example (hypothetical)

An export price falls 10% while the realised local conversion rate rises 15%. With constant volume, converted revenue changes by 0.90 × 1.15 − 1 = +3.5%. Costs and collection still determine the profit impact.

Check your understanding

Can the same global shock have different effects on an importer and exporter? Yes. Map each business’s actual revenue, cost and funding exposures.
