Iran Khodro's 30-50% Factory Price Hike Ignites Dispute with the Competition Council (July 2, 2026)

Iran Khodro raised factory prices 30-50% on June 17, 2026, an increase a member of parliament's industries commission says exceeded what the Competition Council had cleared. The Ministry of Industry and the Competition Council still have not resolved the pricing-authority dispute as of July 2, 2026, while year-on-year car-purchase inflation hit 124...

Iran Khodro (IKCO) raised factory prices on part of its lineup by 30 to 50 percent on June 17, 2026 (27 Khordad 1405), an increase that, according to a member of parliament's Industries and Mines Commission, was carried out without full coordination with the Competition Council (شورای رقابت), Iran's official car-pricing authority. The dispute between the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade (وزارت صمت) and the Competition Council over the permitted ceiling for that increase remains unresolved as of today, Thursday, July 2, 2026 (11 Tir 1405). Over the same period, year-on-year car-purchase inflation for Khordad (the Iranian month ending June 21, 2026) reached more than 124 percent, far above the country's general inflation rate.

Background

On June 17 (27 Khordad), Iran Khodro raised factory prices on part of its lineup, including the Tara and Peugeot 207, by 30 to 50 percent depending on the model (per ILNA and the Young Journalists Club/YJC). According to Eghtesad Online, the Ministry of Industry had initially approved an increase of around 15 percent, against Iran Khodro's request for 22.5 percent; but the final prices announced for some models exceeded that ceiling. Ahmad Bigdeli, a member of parliament's Industries and Mines Commission, told Eco Iran the increase was carried out without coordination with the Competition Council and exceeded the 15 to 20 percent ceiling that body had in mind. In the following days, a deputy industry minister called the announced increase "beyond the permitted level" and sent a written objection, but the Consumer and Producer Protection Organization subsequently said the new prices would not be revised, and that the focus going forward is on reforming the pricing methodology rather than rolling back current prices (per Iranjib and Pedal).

Drivers

The core of the dispute is authority over setting the car-pricing ceiling: the Ministry of Industry approved the increase within its own authority, while the Competition Council, the statutory body overseeing car pricing, denies that full coordination took place. Per Eghtesad Online, an inter-agency working group is simultaneously reviewing the overall car-pricing methodology, which would need Competition Council approval once finalized; no firm timeline for that review has been announced. Alongside this regulatory dispute, per Tejarat News and Eghtesad Online, open-market resale prices for some models trended mildly lower from June 29 to July 1, 2026 (8-10 Tir 1405) amid softer demand and a relatively stable exchange rate over the same window; that has narrowed the factory-to-market gap slightly for some models, though it remains wide for models such as the Quick S.

Outlook

Until the dispute between the Ministry of Industry and the Competition Council over car-pricing authority is resolved, and the pricing-methodology review concludes, the direction of factory prices and the factory-to-market gap in the coming months is unclear. This is an observation about the market's regulatory situation, not a price forecast, and should not be read as advice to buy or sell a vehicle.

What to watch

In the weeks and months ahead, watch for the Competition Council's final decision on the new car-pricing methodology, any further official statements from the Ministry of Industry or the Consumer Protection Organization, and the car-purchase year-on-year inflation reading for Tir (typically released around the middle of the following month).
