Lesson 8

The Coin Premium (Hobab)

A coin premium compares its market price with an explicitly calculated metal value. State the product weight, fineness, international gold quote and exchange-rate basis, with matching timestamps.

A coin premium compares its market price with an explicitly calculated metal value. State the product weight, fineness, international gold quote and exchange-rate basis, with matching timestamps. Premium in rial is price minus metal value; premium percentage divides that gap by metal value. A different denominator gives a different statistic. The calculation excludes manufacturing and transaction costs unless you add them explicitly, so it is an estimate of the metal-price gap rather than a guarantee of profitable arbitrage.

Worked example (hypothetical)

If metal value is 80 million rial and market price 100 million, the gap is 20 million and the premium is 25%. Dividing by market price gives 20%, a different measure.

Check your understanding

If the coin price is unchanged while gold and FX rise, what happens to premium? Recalculate both inputs: metal value may rise and premium may shrink without a fall in the coin price.
