$1 coin bearing Trump's image enters US circulation, a first in a century
4 September 2026 · last month
The US Mint announced that $1 coins bearing the image of President Donald Trump have entered circulation, a step not taken for any living US president in the past century. According to Ecoiran, citing ISNA, the coins are not made of real gold but carry a gold-colored manganese brass coating and were struck at the Philadelphia Mint; the Mint has not disclosed the total number produced but said 250,000 of them carry a special "Fourth of July" mark. The Trump administration has cited the "Redesign of Circulating Collectible Coins Act," passed in 2020, to work around the general ban on depicting living presidents on US currency. The last time a living US president's image was struck on a US coin was a century ago, marking the country's 150th anniversary of independence, with an image of Calvin Coolidge. Members of the bipartisan Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, which advises the Treasury Department, said the coin was not submitted to them for review before production.
