Hemmati: Central Bank Will Not Stand By Amid Currency Market Swings; Coin Options Tool to Launch Next Week
4 September 2026 · last month
Abdolnaser Hemmati, governor of Iran's Central Bank, said on Friday, 13 Shahrivar 1405 (September 4, 2026), according to Khabaronline (citing Tasnim), that despite wartime conditions and severe external restrictions, financing of import currency has fallen only 15 percent from the same period last year, partly reflecting a drop in import volumes. He said the central bank has strengthened its reserve position during this period and has sufficient resources to keep covering the country's trade needs under upcoming scenarios.
Hemmati stressed the central bank will not stand by in the face of abnormal currency market swings and will intervene forcefully and in a timely manner, using its foreign currency capacity and available tools, wherever rates diverge from economic fundamentals. He announced the launch of a "coin option" instrument in the coming days as a new tool to hedge risk, saying further instruments would be activated depending on market conditions.
