A 13 percentage point gap has opened between the Tehran bourse's equal weighted and main indices since the start of the year

1 August 2026 | 3 months ago

According to a report in the Saturday 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405) edition of the newspaper Donya-e-Eqtesad, the Tehran Stock Exchange's main index has returned about 37 percent since the start of the Iranian year 1405, while the equal weighted index has risen 50 percent over the same period. The 13 percentage point gap between the two gauges indicates that small and mid cap shares, rather than the large index heavyweights, have been the main engine of the market's advance in recent months.

In the trading week ending Wednesday 29 July 2026 (7 Mordad 1405), the main index rose 3.9 percent to 5,075,000 points, while the equal weighted index gained 5.66 percent to 1,432,000 points, its best weekly performance in six weeks. In the equal weighted index every company carries the same weight regardless of market value, so its outperformance means the advance has broadened across a wider range of listed shares.

In the same week, retail investors were net buyers on four of the five trading days, with an outflow recorded only on Wednesday. In total about 6,300 billion tomans of retail money entered the equity market, and the average value of retail trading stood in the 27,000 billion toman channel.
