According to new Baker Hughes data published on Friday 31 July 2026 (9 Mordad 1405), the total number of active oil and gas drilling rigs in the United States rose this week to 588, which is 48 more than at the same point last year.
The number of active oil rigs rose by one to 451, which is 41 above the same time last year. Gas rigs were unchanged at 127, three more than a year earlier, and miscellaneous rigs held at 10.
The figures were published while West Texas Intermediate crude has been trading near $85 a barrel. The rig count is one of the leading indicators of US shale oil supply and feeds into the outlook for global supply.
