Araghchi in Baghdad: Seven-Day Hormuz Reopening Plan Passed to the US via Qatar, Choice Now Rests With Washington

17 October 2026 | 3 days ago

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation foreign ministers' council in Baghdad, as reported by IRNA and Donya-e-Eqtesad on Saturday, 17 October 2026, said Tehran has passed a specific seven-day programme to the United States through Qatar. He said that if the necessary conditions are met, the Strait of Hormuz can reopen and normal maritime traffic can return within seven days, and that the choice now rests with the US.

Araghchi also said that after the Islamabad memorandum signed by Iran and the US on 17 June 2026, shipping recovered to about 60 percent of pre-war levels within two weeks, but unilateral US measures and military attacks blocked its implementation. These figures and assessments are the Iranian foreign minister's statements and have not been independently confirmed. The seven-day plan was first outlined in New York on 2 Mehr 1405 (24 September 2026).
