In an analysis piece for the Financial Times, reported by IRNA on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote that on the sidelines of the recent UN General Assembly he presented the United States, through mediators, with a seven-day plan. He says it sets out the steps each side would take to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and that Washington is not asked to do anything it has not already agreed to.

Under the plan, Hormuz would reopen on day six and talks toward a final agreement would resume on day seven. In the same piece Araghchi wrote that Iran has no trust in the sincerity of Washington's stated wish for peace and that the White House has shown no willingness to reach an understanding. These are the Iranian foreign minister's positions; the report carries no official US response to the plan's details.
