Araghchi presses Cyprus over the use of foreign bases and briefs its foreign minister on the Oman-mediated Hormuz talks

30 July 2026 | 3 months ago

According to the Tasnim news agency, republished by Eghtesad Online, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi spoke on the latest bilateral and regional developments at midday on Thursday, 30 July 2026 (8 Mordad 1405), in response to a telephone call from Konstantinos Kombos, the foreign minister of Cyprus.

In the call, Araghchi stressed the importance of preventing any misuse against Iran of the foreign bases located in Cyprus. The Cypriot foreign minister pointed to his country's adherence to the principles of international law and the need to settle disputes peacefully, and said Cyprus had obtained assurances in contacts with the British government that the foreign bases located in the country would not be used against any state, including Iran.

According to the same report, Araghchi briefed the Cypriot foreign minister on the latest course of talks with Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz, and on developments in Iran's relations with Ukraine and Bulgaria. For markets, the reference to continuing Oman-mediated talks on the Strait of Hormuz matters, because the transit arrangements for the strait have been one of the main variables in global oil and LNG prices and in freight and cargo insurance costs in recent weeks.
