Abdolnaser Hemmati, governor of the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran (CBI), told a meeting of BRICS finance ministers and central bank governors in Jaipur, India, reported by Boursenews on Monday, 17 August 2026 (26 Mordad 1405), that the bloc needs a dedicated BRICS financial corridor and linked national payment networks among member states.
He said connecting payment networks and expanding the use of national currencies could reduce reliance on financial channels outside BRICS and lower the cost and risk of transactions. Hemmati added that Iran's central bank has taken part in BRICS working groups on cross border payments, financial technology and sustainable finance since joining the bloc, and is ready to help draft a roadmap for linking members' payment systems and to pursue membership in the New Development Bank.
