Lesson 50

The Turkish Lira: a Neighbor's Economy

The Turkish lira is a neighbouring currency, not a substitute for the dollar or a direct measure of Iranian prices. Inflation, expected policy, external financing and domestic demand influence its value through changing channels.

The Turkish lira is a neighbouring currency, not a substitute for the dollar or a direct measure of Iranian prices. Inflation, expected policy, external financing and domestic demand influence its value through changing channels. For a cross-border purchase or property, translate local prices and costs into the reporting currency at compatible dates. A falling currency can offset a nominal rise in the asset price. This lesson makes no claim about today’s Turkish policy rate or property-access rules; those require current official notices.

Worked example (hypothetical)

A property rises 30% in lira while one lira loses 25% against the reporting currency. Converted value changes by 1.30 × 0.75 − 1 = −2.5%, before rent, taxes and sale costs.

Check your understanding

What is missing from a local-currency return comparison? FX conversion, costs, cash flows and matching observation dates.
