Central Bank FX Aide Says Market Interventions Aim to Curb Volatility, Not Make Profit
20 October 2026 | 23 hours ago
Mahdi Darabi, the foreign-exchange aide to the central bank governor, rejected claims that the bank buys cheap foreign currency and sells it higher, in remarks published by Fars and carried by Donya-e-Eqtesad on Tuesday, 28 Mehr 1405 (October 20, 2026). He said the central bank's FX intervention is meant to control market volatility and the trades are not made for profit.
Darabi added that every central bank in the world buys and sells foreign currency and that intervention is an inherent duty of a central bank. In his words, judging the intervention by profit and loss is wrong, otherwise one would have to say the bank lost money in earlier periods when it sold foreign currency.
