Chinese Steel Rebar Prices Hit Their Lowest Since October 2025 as Tangshan Mill Losses Passed 100 Yuan a Tonne

31 July 2026 · 2 months ago

Steel rebar futures in China fell to around 3,010 yuan a tonne, their lowest level since October 2025. According to Trading Economics on Friday, 31 July 2026, widening losses at Chinese steel mills and a deteriorating industry outlook continued to weigh on the market.

Industry data showed that average losses at steel mills in Tangshan have passed 100 yuan a tonne and are expected to keep widening, leaving the sector likely to remain under pressure next month. China's prolonged property downturn has also curbed steel demand, as construction accounts for roughly one third of the country's steel consumption and the bulk of rebar usage.

Investors are awaiting the outcome of the Politburo meeting in Beijing, where policymakers are widely expected to refrain from announcing major new stimulus and instead focus on implementing existing fiscal policies to support the slowing economy. The benchmark steel price was recorded at 2,993 yuan a tonne on 31 July, down 1.74% over one month and 6.85% compared with a year earlier.
