Dutch Central Bank Moves Part of Its Gold Reserves From the US and Canada to Britain

The Dutch central bank (DNB) said on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 (11 Shahrivar 1405), according to IRNA, citing Bloomberg, that between March and August 2026 it moved about 86 tons of the roughly 313 tons of its gold reserves held in the United States and Canada from New York and Ottawa to London. With the shift, London now holds the largest share of the Dutch central bank's gold reserves.
DNB President Olaf Sleijpen said in a statement that the move improves the tradability of the bank's gold reserves and, in response to rising instability and geopolitical tensions, strengthens its readiness for rapid access to the reserves in a crisis. Central bank gold held in London sits with the Bank of England, which holds more than $780 billion worth of gold bullion belonging to other monetary institutions. A few months earlier, the Bank of France had sold gold reserves it held in the United States and replaced them with reserves held in Paris.
