Egypt's government said on Thursday, July 30, 2026, that it has secured alternative sources to cover the country's energy demand after a drone strike caused fire on two gas vessels at Damietta Port. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced this in a separate statement. No party has yet claimed responsibility for the attack and investigations are continuing.
Egypt's Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat said the country's electricity demand had been at a peak level of 37 to 39 gigawatts over the past 15 days, adding that the government holds sufficient stocks of alternative fuels, including more than 425,000 tonnes of fuel oil at power plants alone, on top of strategic storage.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, in a phone call with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, warned that West Asia was heading towards a serious escalation and stressed the need for Egypt, Spain, Europe and the international community to unite to halt it. Spain's prime minister condemned the attack and called on the UN to intensify efforts to stop the regional conflict.
