The deputy energy minister and managing director of Iran's Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA) said on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, during a visit to solar plants in western Golestan province, that the country's renewable generation capacity has risen from 1,250 megawatts to about 5,800 megawatts. Mohsen Tarzatalab said roughly 4,500 megawatts of new capacity has been added to the national grid since the current government took office.
Tarzatalab added that under current planning, renewable capacity is due to reach 7,000 megawatts by the end of Shahrivar (late September) and 12,000 megawatts by the end of the Iranian year, and that meeting the target depends on securing the necessary financing.
On Golestan, he said a private-sector solar plant in Gonbad-e Kavus is in its final construction stages, with part of its capacity due to connect to the national grid within about 20 days and the remainder by September 11. The managing director of Golestan's power distribution company said about four megawatts of the province's 19-megawatt plant is now online, while the 25-megawatt Aq Qala plant has yet to come on stream because of sanctions-related constraints and delays in the arrival of foreign technical staff. The figures come alongside official warnings about a gas shortfall in the coming winter.
