Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, deputy energy minister for electricity, said on Monday, September 14, 2026, that with structural barriers removed and free transit granted on the national grid, the state monopoly on electricity imports has been broken, allowing large industries, especially petrochemical companies that suffered serious damage during the war, to import electricity directly from neighboring countries such as Turkiye using their own foreign currency resources. He said about 4,700 megawatts of power capacity operated by industrial and petrochemical firms is currently offline, with at most half expected back online by the end of the Iranian year. According to Rajabi Mashhadi, Turkish power producers have expressed readiness to sell directly to Iranian petrochemical industries, with the Energy Ministry only carrying the imported power over national transmission lines. He added Iran can receive up to 2 billion kilowatt hours annually from Turkmenistan, and the ministry delivered six times more electricity to petrochemical industries this summer than in previous years.
