Hong Kong bucks the Asian trend: Hang Seng rises 0.6 percent on Tuesday to 25,370
28 July 2026 | 3 months ago
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index closed Tuesday, 28 July 2026 (6 Mordad 1405), up 0.6 percent, or 160 points, at 25,370, holding its gains against a broad wave of selling across Asian equity markets. Strong capital inflows and buoyant initial public offering activity offset another round of global selling in semiconductor shares.
The session's main support was the successful listing of Zhongji Innolight, regarded as one of the largest initial public offerings in Asia this year, which showed that demand for Chinese technology offerings persists despite the broader weakness in the chip sector. Investors were at the same time focused on Shein's planned Hong Kong listing and on its valuation and recent financial results. Among the biggest gainers, Horizon Robotics rose 6.3 percent, SMIC 2.3 percent, Meituan 2.3 percent, Xiaomi 1.6 percent and Tencent 1.4 percent.
Hong Kong's performance that day stood in contrast to the exchanges of Japan, South Korea and mainland China, which all retreated under pressure from chip share selling. Later in the week investors are awaiting earnings from major US technology companies and the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision. The Hong Kong exchange is one of the main financing routes for Chinese companies and a reference point for risk appetite in Asian emerging markets.
