Iran's central bank has presented Iran Wallet as part of its programme to redesign the country's payment network. According to a report published on Wednesday, 14 Mordad 1405 (5 August 2026), 90 million wallets have been created for citizens so far, although the central bank has not yet published figures for active wallets, unique users, or the volume and value of transactions.
The service is activated with the USSD code *98# using a SIM card registered to the user's national identity number. After identity verification, users can view their balance, top up the wallet with a bank card, transfer money by mobile phone number from wallet to wallet, and move the balance to a bank account by registering an IBAN. Each transaction result is sent by SMS from the sender ID IRANWALLET, and discrepancies are to be reviewed within 24 hours.
Hamidreza Norouzi, head of the central bank's payment systems supervision department, said the system is currently connected to Tara, Ovano, SnappPay, Top, Ap, Rubika and JibJet, allowing users to spend their balance at stores contracted with those platforms and at bakeries covered by the state bread scheme. On the possibility of paying part of the cash subsidy and civil servants' benefits into the wallet, central bank officials have spoken of coordination under way, and no final decision has been announced.
