Hamidreza Norouzi, head of the payment systems supervision department at the Central Bank of Iran, said on Tuesday 4 August 2026 that 90 million Iran Wallet accounts have been created for Iranians so far.
He said the new payment instrument has been designed and implemented over USSD short codes, and that users can view their wallet by dialling *98# and use services such as topping up the wallet and wallet to wallet transfers. The product is connected to other commercial wallets, so holders can spend their balance at the merchant networks contracted with those wallets.
The remarks followed a recent government decision to assign Iran Wallet accounts to state employees. Norouzi said the tool is intended to cover essential purchases and routine household spending.
