Iran's central bank says using national currencies is one option for expanding financial exchanges with Malaysia

The deputy for international relations at the Central Bank of Iran said on Sunday 26 July 2026 that, given the constraints created by sanctions, the use of national currencies is one of the options under review for expanding financial exchanges between Iran and Malaysia.
According to Mehr News Agency, the remarks were made in the context of examining ways to broaden banking cooperation between the two countries.
Settling trade in national currencies rather than the dollar is one of the mechanisms Iran has pursued with several trading partners in recent years. The report did not state a target volume of exchanges or a timetable for implementing the mechanism with Malaysia.
