Azim Etemadi, chairman and chief executive of Iran's Thermal Power Plants Holding Company, said on the evening of Sunday, 26 July 2026 (4 Mordad 1405), during a visit to the Islamabad-e Gharb gas power plant, that a generation record of 79,000 MW was set on Saturday, 25 July, alongside the lowest level of emergency unit outages. He said the highest volume of power plant maintenance work had been carried out in this period despite wartime conditions.
Etemadi said 2,600 MW of new capacity has been added to the national grid since last year's consumption peak, and that the only remaining unit is the Dalahu plant, expected to come online within the next 10 to 15 days. He also announced the commissioning of the country's first geothermal plant, with a capacity of 5.4 MW, and the start-up of the second unit at the Neka plant, rated at 183 MW, in 99 days.
About 3,000 MW of additional capacity is planned for next year, which he said would require roughly 2 billion euros of investment. Citing forecasts of continued heat, Etemadi said this summer's peak electricity demand is likely to occur this week.
