Iraq Says Chazabeh Crossing Is Closed for Technical Reasons as Khuzestan Pushes for Reopening
21 October 2026 | 2 hours ago
Iraqi government spokesman Haidar al-Aboudi told Iraq's official news agency that the Al-Shaib (Chazabeh) crossing with Iran is closed for technical reasons, saying the halt is meant to raise the crossing's technical and logistical readiness. He added that several other border crossings are carrying trade with Iran without problems. Donya-e-Eqtesad, citing Jamaran, carried the remarks on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
The same day, Khuzestan's deputy governor for security said removing obstacles to trade and passenger traffic through Chazabeh is the province's priority and that the follow-up will continue until a result is reached. Ecoiran's currency-market report said there were reports of an order by Iraq's prime minister to close the crossing, which, if confirmed, would restrict Iran's border trade with Iraq further. No reopening date has been announced.
