Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces confirms US and Saudi strikes on its bases and reports dead and wounded
29 July 2026 | 3 months ago
Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) said in an official statement on Wednesday, 29 July 2026 (7 Mordad 1405), that several of its official bases in various parts of Iraq had been struck by US and Saudi forces earlier that morning. The statement was relayed by the Mehr news agency citing Iraqi sources.
According to the organisation, and based on preliminary information, the strikes killed and wounded several people and caused material damage to a number of buildings and assets belonging to the PMF. The statement said the relevant units were carrying out a field assessment of the situation and that the evaluation of damages and precise figures was continuing. The PMF described the strikes as a highly dangerous escalation, a violation of Iraq's territorial integrity and an attack on the country's official security institutions.
US Central Command had earlier said American and Saudi fighter aircraft struck positions in eastern Iraq, an action Washington described as a response to a series of drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities. Iraq is the leading destination for Iran's non-oil exports, and rising tensions on Iraqi soil affect both cross-border trade and the risk premium in the global oil market.
