Kuwait rations electricity after power and water plants are hit on four consecutive days
29 July 2026 | 3 months ago
Kuwaiti authorities have called on the public to use less energy so that round-the-clock electricity can be maintained while the country's grid comes under attack. Kuwait said several power and water plants were hit on Monday 27 July 2026, causing fires, in the fourth such attack in as many days.
Kuwait and Bahrain have been among Iran's main targets in the Persian Gulf since its ceasefire with the United States collapsed. Residents of Kuwait, one of the world's hottest countries, have been cutting their use of air conditioning at the height of summer as authorities turn electricity conservation into a national priority.
Across the Persian Gulf most desalination plants are built as integrated power and water facilities, because the process requires intensive energy input. Damage to the grid, or to the connections feeding it, can therefore disrupt freshwater output as well.
