Lebanon's prime minister travels to Baghdad on Sunday, 26 July 2026, leading a senior delegation that includes the finance and energy ministers and the director general of general security. According to an announcement on Saturday, 25 July, the visit centres on the Iraq Syria Lebanon oil pipeline project and energy cooperation between the two countries.
The historic Kirkuk to Tripoli pipeline, which runs through Syrian territory, has been out of service for decades, and bringing it back into operation would require heavy investment and a three way agreement.
Overland oil transport schemes in West Asia are being pursued at a time when the region's maritime routes, from the Strait of Hormuz to Bab el-Mandeb, face disruption and sharply higher insurance costs, pushing regional states to reconsider their energy export routes.
