Majlis energy commission says Iran's power deficit has fallen below 10,000 MW and household outages should end from 23 September

2 August 2026 | 3 months ago

Reza Sepahvand, spokesperson for the energy commission of Iran's parliament, set out the energy ministry's report to the commission on Sunday 2 August 2026 (11 Mordad 1405), saying the electricity deficit, which stood between 15,000 and 17,000 megawatts last year, has now fallen below 10,000 megawatts.

He said renewable capacity, particularly solar, has reached 5,700 megawatts with 100 megawatts of new capacity coming online each week, about 9,000 megawatts is supplied by hydroelectric dams, and the target is for solar capacity to reach 12,000 megawatts by the end of the Iranian year 1405, which ends in March 2027. Against that, about 4,200 megawatts of capacity at power plants in the south and at Zob Ahan Esfahan was taken out of service by the war and is being rebuilt, while the energy ministry has allocated 1,000 megawatts to supply petrochemical plants that were previously self sufficient.

Sepahvand added that a directive issued last week by the energy ministry and Tavanir cut power outages at industrial estates from two days a week to one, but that it applies only to 49 selected estates, a point the commission is pursuing. Based on the minister's undertaking, there will be no household power cuts from 23 September 2026 (1 Mehr 1405), provided current conditions hold.
