Motion to Impeach Araghchi Uploaded With 35 Signatures, but Parliament Has Not Yet Received It

16 October 2026 | 5 days ago

A motion to impeach Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has been uploaded to parliament's system with 35 signatures. Khabaronline reported on 16 October 2026 (24 Mehr 1405) that Tehran MP Amirhossein Sabeti uploaded the motion while the minister was on a trip to New York, and that Tehran MP Mahmoud Nabavian published the list of signatories. Nine of Tehran's 30 MPs signed.

Signatory Kamran Ghazanfari told Khabaronline that Araghchi's two-week stay in New York raised questions and that, in his view, one day would have been enough to pass Iran's message to the Americans. Zanjan MP Mostafa Taheri said the foreign ministry's actions have had negative effects in military and economic areas. Damghan MP Ali Akbar Alizadeh said the speaker and parliament have not yet received the motion and that it currently has little relevance; he said about 15 impeachment motions have been uploaded in the past two years and only the economy minister's was formally announced.

The process is not yet official: announcement of the motion on the parliament floor is the condition for an impeachment to begin. The statements above are views of the MPs quoted, and the report carries no response from the government.
