Qatar says no deal has yet been reached on reopening the Strait of Hormuz
4 August 2026 | 3 months ago
Majed al-Ansari, spokesman for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Tuesday 4 August 2026 that no agreement has yet been reached on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and that the parties involved have been exchanging draft texts as part of the current diplomatic effort.
He said Doha's immediate priority is containing the crisis, reopening the Strait and clearing the way for a resumption of talks between Iran and the United States, adding that consultations are continuing around the clock and that mediators are focused on finding a short term arrangement.
The position differs from remarks the same day by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said a deal on the waterway could be reached within a day or two. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday 3 August that no significant change in the situation at the Strait of Hormuz should be expected while the declared naval blockade and military attacks on Iran continue.
