Saudi Arabia attributes a drone attack on its oil facilities to Iraqi groups; Baghdad opens a security investigation and the Iraqi resistance denies it

28 July 2026 | 3 months ago

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Monday, 27 July 2026 (5 Mordad 1405), that Iraqi resistance groups had targeted the kingdom's oil facilities in the Eastern Province and in Riyadh with drones, and that the drones were intercepted by air defences. The developments were reported by ISNA and carried by Eghtesad Online in the early hours of Tuesday, 6 Mordad.

The office of Iraq's prime minister announced on Monday evening that Falih al-Zeidi had ordered a security investigation into the Saudi statement that the kingdom's oil facilities had been targeted by drones launched from Iraqi territory. The statement said Iraq adheres to the principle of not permitting any attack from its soil against friendly and neighbouring countries.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq rejected the accusation, saying, in remarks carried by Al Mayadeen, that the Saudi claims were an attempt to justify the kingdom's inability to respond to Yemeni attacks, and adding that Riyadh should end the blockade on the people of Yemen instead of levelling accusations. Sahmino does not independently confirm any of these claims and reports them as attributed to the parties' own statements. The security of Saudi oil facilities is one of the variables bearing on the risk premium in the world oil market, where Brent fell in Monday's trading.
