Saudi Fighter Jet Downed Over Marib as Riyadh Seeks Missile Defense Help

17 September 2026 | last month

Fighting between the Saudi led coalition and Yemen's Houthi forces escalated on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. According to Al Jazeera, a Houthi military spokesperson said Saudi warplanes carried out 40 air strikes over the previous 24 hours targeting the provinces of Taiz, Marib and Hodeidah. In response, the Houthis said they struck the Khamis Mushait airbase and an oil facility in the Red Sea port city of Yanbu, and claimed to have shot down a Saudi fighter jet over Marib using a locally made surface to air missile.

Citing the Associated Press, Al Jazeera reported that Saudi Arabia, whose stock of missile interceptors is dwindling, has asked France, Pakistan, Egypt and the United Kingdom to deploy air defense support against Houthi attacks. Reuters reported separately that US officials held direct talks with Houthi representatives in Muscat last weekend. The strike on the Yanbu oil facility, alongside ongoing Strait of Hormuz tensions, adds to Persian Gulf regional risk that indirectly feeds into the global oil risk premium and Iran's own parallel markets.
