Saudi-Led Coalition Says It Downed Four Drones Over Riyadh, the Eastern Province and the South
18 October 2026 | 2 days ago
Major-General Turki al-Maliki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen's Houthis, said on Saturday, October 17, 2026, that four drones were intercepted and destroyed over the past few hours over Riyadh, the Eastern Province and southern Saudi Arabia. Al Jazeera writes that Riyadh's King Khalid airport has been attacked at least 20 times since the fighting flared again in July, including one attack last week that killed 13 people. Several embassies in Saudi Arabia have restricted their citizens' travel and warned them off airports, and the Saudi Ministry of Education extended remote learning in Riyadh and Diriyah.
Saudi Arabia has accused Iran of encouraging the Houthis' escalation, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran regards a comprehensive political process as the only practical and sustainable way to resolve the conflict. The Eastern Province hosts a large share of Saudi Arabia's oil infrastructure.
