Tehran denies direct talks with Washington and says discussions with Oman on the Strait of Hormuz continue

According to Al Jazeera's live coverage on Tuesday, 4 August 2026 (13 Mordad 1405), US President Donald Trump said talks with Iran are under way and described the negotiations as Tehran's "last chance" to secure a deal ending the five month conflict.
Tehran, in response, denied holding any talks with Washington and said its discussions with Oman about the Strait of Hormuz are continuing. According to the same report, those discussions concern increasing shipping through the waterway.
The conflicting accounts come as the oil market reacts to the prospect of renewed negotiations: Brent crude fell more than 5 percent on Monday, 3 August (12 Mordad), to around $83.4 a barrel. The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly one fifth of global oil supply, and any change in its shipping status feeds directly into the risk premium in oil prices and into Iran's currency market.
