Tehran mayor: closing the city's fuel depots is on the agenda, their capacity has been reduced
29 July 2026 | 3 months ago
Tehran mayor Alireza Zakani said on Wednesday 29 July 2026, discussing the future of the Shahran fuel depot, that the oil depots in the north-west, north-east and south of Tehran were built when those sites lay outside the city limits, but that the city's expansion has left them inside the urban fabric.
He said that since last year's war the volumes and capacity held at the depots have been reduced, so the kind of hazard seen in the Shahran depot fire has been substantially lowered, but that closing the depots remains on the city administration's agenda. Zakani said no new depot will be built in that area.
The mayor added that the necessary cooperation has been secured in meetings with National Iranian Oil Company officials and that, alongside relocation, plans are under review to reroute product transfers so they no longer pass through the city.
