The US Senate blocks a resolution to end the war with Iran by 50 votes to 49

The US Senate on Thursday, 30 July 2026 (8 Mordad 1405), blocked by 50 votes to 49 a resolution that would have required the president to withdraw US forces from the war against Iran. The measure was to have been discharged from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and brought to the floor.
According to The Hill, Republican senators Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Rand Paul of Kentucky joined Democrats in seeking to advance the measure, while John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the only Democrat to vote against it. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said on the floor that Trump had stated the war would last a week, yet American service members are still being killed five months later.
This was the thirteenth time the Senate has voted on a measure related to a war powers resolution concerning Iran. Republicans had blocked such resolutions on 11 previous occasions, and once, on 23 June, voted for a concurrent resolution that the House had also passed, though that measure was non-binding and did not require the president's signature. A continuing war keeps the risk premium alive in oil and gold prices.
