Trade Promotion Organization says Iran's exports average about 300 dollars a tonne against about 2,000 dollars for imports

Mohammad Ali Dehghan Dehnavi, head of Iran's Trade Promotion Organization and a deputy minister of industry, mine and trade, said on Saturday 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405), at a joint meeting with the board of the Iran Chamber of Guilds, that a new roadmap for a jump in non oil exports is being drawn up. He said the roadmap stresses a strategic shift from exporting raw and semi raw materials towards finished goods with high added value.
He said the average value of a tonne of the country's exports is currently about 300 dollars, while the figure for imported goods reaches about 2,000 dollars a tonne. He said the bulk of non oil exports is concentrated in upstream industries such as the steel chain, iron ore, pellets and billets, whereas the value per tonne of finished guild products such as furniture, clothing, footwear, leather and handicrafts starts at 1,000 dollars and reaches several thousand dollars for clothing and footwear.
On the rules governing the repatriation of export proceeds, Dehghan Dehnavi said returning foreign currency is a national necessity but that the way the rules are framed should not obstruct registered exporters. The meeting agreed to set up a dedicated service desk staffed by the export and import regulations offices and the currency services offices, with each union referring three to four of its problem cases to that desk.
