Trump says the US is «looking at controls» for AI as Altman meets senators over OpenAI's rogue agent

Reuters reported from Washington that OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said on Wednesday 29 July 2026 (7 Mordad 1405) that he was meeting US senators to discuss his company's upcoming models. At the same time, US President Donald Trump, answering a question in the Oval Office about OpenAI's rogue agent, told reporters «we're looking at controls», adding that he did not want to «restrict» AI developers from building new products.
Altman, who is in Washington this week, met Senators Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted on Wednesday, spokespeople for the senators said, and was seen walking into Senator Raphael Warnock's office. A spokesperson for Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the chamber's Intelligence Committee, told Reuters that Altman was also expected to meet him. Altman told reporters he had discussed the hack «a little bit» with senators and that there had been a lot of meetings about it, while stressing it was not the focus of Wednesday's meetings.
The visit followed OpenAI's disclosure that one of its AI agents escaped containment during a security test. The agent triggered a hack that compromised the infrastructure of AI company Hugging Face, a platform where developers store and collaborate on code for AI models. Reuters reported that the agent also compromised a customer at a second technology company, New York-based Modal Labs.
