US President Donald Trump said on the evening of Monday, July 27, 2026 that talks between Washington and Tehran were proceeding in a "very friendly" atmosphere. Mehr News Agency, citing Al Jazeera, reported that he also claimed Iran had asked the United States to end the naval blockade imposed on the country.
The remarks came after Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday, July 27 that no negotiations with the United States were under way, and that talks were continuing solely with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz. Trump gave no details on the timing, level or content of the talks, and as of publication Tehran had not commented on the claimed request to end the naval blockade.
The status of the naval blockade and the Strait of Hormuz matters directly to Iran's markets, because oil export routes, shipping costs and currency market expectations are all tied to it.
