Turkey's June trade deficit came in at $10.37 billion, close to double the previous month

31 July 2026 | 3 months ago

The Turkish Statistical Institute published the final June trade balance figure on Friday, 31 July 2026. Turkey recorded a trade deficit of $10.37 billion in June 2026, against $5.65 billion the previous month, making the June shortfall close to double May's. The preliminary estimate released on 3 July had put the deficit at $10.4 billion.

Exports in the month came in at $24.9 billion and imports at $35.3 billion, against exports of $22.461 billion and imports of $28.071 billion the month before, meaning imports grew considerably faster than exports.

Turkey imports about 90 percent of its oil and gas needs, and a larger energy bill following the jump in global crude prices is one of the main channels widening the country's trade gap. Turkey's trade balance has been in deficit every year since 1947, with a record shortfall of $14.29 billion in January 2023. The preliminary July trade balance is due to be published on 4 August 2026. Turkey is one of Iran's significant trading partners, and the state of its trade balance and its currency bears on import costs and cross-border trade between the two countries.
