The UN Security Council held a meeting on Thursday, September 10, 2026 (19 Shahrivar 1405), at the request of France, this month's council president, under the "non-proliferation" agenda item on the 1737 (2006) Iran sanctions committee. The meeting's agenda was approved by a procedural vote of 11 in favor, 2 against (China and Russia) and 2 abstentions. According to Khabaronline reporting from UN headquarters in New York, no representative of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres attended and no report on Committee 1737 was read out; Iran's representative was also absent.
According to Ecoiran, citing ISNA, China's representative told the meeting that insisting on reimposing sanctions on Iran endangers international peace and security, adding, "We believe snapback has ended and we are witnessing the JCPOA's sunset." Russia's representative backed China's position and repeated that Moscow opposes any anti-Iran resolution. Under Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015), which had suspended all earlier UN sanctions on Iran including Resolution 1737, that resolution fully expired on October 18, 2025. Like previous sessions of this committee, Thursday's meeting ended without any result.
