US administration sends Congress a $175.8 million plan to replace undersea cables
28 July 2026 | 3 months ago
The US administration submitted a $175.8 million plan to Congress on Tuesday 28 July 2026 (6 Mordad 1405) to replace undersea telecommunications cables in the Caribbean and Central America, aiming to limit the expansion of Chinese influence in the region's communications infrastructure.
Undersea cables are the main medium for intercontinental data transfer, and their ownership and operation have in recent years become one of the fronts of technological competition between the United States and China. That competition affects telecom equipment makers and communications infrastructure operators in global markets.
